Over the past few weeks I’ve had the opportunity to use the Koogeek Smart Socket, which is a Wi-Fi connected light bulb socket that allows you to control your light from your smartphone either using the Koogeek app or Apple Home Kit. Their app also gives you the ability to track how much electricity the light bulb is using and set a schedule for automatically turning the light on and off.
Setting Up The Koogeek Smart Socket
Set up is pretty straightforward using the quick guide that is included in the box. The basic process is to install the Koogeek Home app from the App Store. You would then put the socket into a lamp and put a light bulb into the socket. When you turn on the power to the lamp, you’ll get a flashing green light showing that the smart socket is ready to connect. Within the Koogeek Home app, it’ll guide you through the setup process to pair the smart socket with your Wi-Fi.
I actually had difficulty getting the app to recognize the Koogeek Smart Socket at first. After looking at the setup guide, I reset the smart socket by holding in the power button for 10 seconds. Once the device reset, I was able to successfully pair it.
One opportunity for improvement for the Koogeek Smart Socket is to offer support for 5GHz Wi-Fi. Depending on your home setup, the smart socket only supports the 2.4GHz network so it may or may not work for you. My wireless router is configured to use both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz range with the same SSID. The devices automatically select the best range. If you have a different SSID for your 2.4GHz network than your 5GHz network, you’ll need to have your phone connected to the 2.4GHz network to setup the device and to control it remotely.
Using The Koogeek Smart Socket
You can control the Koogeek Smart Socket from either the Koogeek app or the Apple Home Kit app. Once the smart socket is recognized by the Koogeek app, it is automatically added to the Home Kit app. Turning the light on and off is as easy as tapping the icon for the socket, or you can long press for more options.
Within the app, you can setup different rooms, rename the accessories and setup scenes for different rooms. If you have an Apple Watch, you can also control the smart socket from your Apple Watch.
Overall, I’m very pleased with the Koogeek Smart Socket. I’ve never owned an IoT (Internet Of Things) light bulb socket before, but I can see the benefits of having one. I look forward to seeing if Koogeek will release a future version with support for the 5GHz Wi-Fi range, as that’s the only improvement I have to offer.
