When it comes to Windows Feature Updates, there are two types of people – those who want to install the updates as soon as they’re released and those who would prefer to wait. We’ve been running the update since the Release Preview was released to Windows Insiders and so far we haven’t had any issues. How to install the Windows 10 April 2018 Update with Windows Update
Since Microsoft officially made the update available to the public, the easiest way to get it is by using Windows Update. The installation process can take a while (up to an hour), so be prepared for your computer to reboot a few times.
- Open Settings.
- Click on Update & security.
- Click the Check for updates button.
- After the update finishes downloading and goes through the update installation you’ll be prompted to reboot.
How to install the Windows 10 April 2018 Update with the Update Assistant
If the update isn’t available through Windows Update yet, you can use the Update Assistant.
- Download the Update Assistant from the Microsoft support website, selecting the Windows 10 April 2018 Update and clicking the Update now button.
- Double-click the Windows10Upgrade.exe file to launch the tool.
- Click the Update Now button.
- If your device is compatible, click the Next button to begin the upgrade.
- Click the Restart Now button.
How to install the Windows 10 April 2018 Update with the Media Creation Tool
If you’re going to be installing the update to multiple computers, the best route might be to use the Media Creation Tool to create a bootable USB drive that you can use. You can also use this tool to upgrade the PC immediately like the methods above.
- Download the Media Creation Tool from the Microsoft support website.
- Double-click the MediaCreationTool.exe file to start the process.
- Click the Accept button to agree to the terms.
- Select the Upgrade this PC now option or create a bootable USB if you’re going to upgrade multiple PCs.
- Click the Accept button again.
- Click the Next button.
- Confirm the Keep personal files and apps option is selected.
- Click the Install button to begin.
Disk Cleanup
After you install a Feature Update, it is a good idea to run the Disk Cleanup tool once you verify everything is working and you’re comfortable that you won’t need to go back to the previous version of Windows. The update creates a Windows.old directory that is used to restore your PC to the previous build of Windows 10. This directory can take up over 20GB of space on your hard drive.
- Click Start and type Disk Cleanup and click on the first desktop application that appears.
- Click the button Clean Up System Files (also select the C drive if you have multiple hard drives).
- Check all of the boxes in the Files To Delete window, but the main one to look for is Previous Windows Installations.
- Then click OK.
