How To Fix Fortnite Crash Windows PC

If you’re a Fortnite player using a Windows PC or laptop and you’ve found this article, you’re probably having Fortnite crash while launching or during game play. Unfortunately everyone’s setup is different, which makes it difficult to troubleshoot, but there are a few steps you can go through on your PC that might fix Fortnite crashing in Windows. Check for Updates

The first thing to do is make sure you check for all updates on your computer. Check for Windows updates first and install any that are missing. The next thing to look for are driver and firmware updates for your computer. You’ll want to go to the support website of your computer manufacturer and search for your specific make and model of PC or laptop. Most major PC brands offer a scanning tool on their website that will scan your system and give you a list of outdated drivers. The main one for any video game is the graphics driver, but it is a good idea to install all of the drivers that are out of date.

Change Fortnite Graphics Settings

You can try making your settings match the image above depending on your system, and if it continues to crash you can keep lowering them until the crashing stops. Changing your settings too low can affect gameplay, so it is suggested to try Medium and High settings and tweak from there.

First, you’ll need to navigate to the Game Settings menu:

• After logging into the main lobby, click the hamburger menu (3 lines)
• Select the cog symbol and you’ll be brought into the Game Settings menu
• Go to the Video tab

One of the most common settings to change first is Shadows. You can try Medium, but you may need to set it to Off to get the best results. You can also try a lower resolution. Another setting to turn off for best performance is Motion Blur.

Remember to click the Apply button!

Turn off TdrLevel in the Registry

If you’re not familiar with working in the Windows registry, please contact someone that is. Making the wrong change can completely crash Windows. Tdr stands for Timeout Detection and Recovery and it is a feature built into Windows that monitors the graphics card (GPU) for issues, but during game play it can sometimes cause crashes because of high usage when there’s really not an issue. The main crash this change will fix is the error “Display Driver has stopped responding”.

Backup your registry first:

• Press the Windows logo key and R on your keyboard to open the Run box
• Type regedit and press Enter on your keyboard
• Click File, then click Export
• Select the location where you want to save the backup copy, then type a name in the File name box. After that click Save

Change/Create The TdrLevel Registry Key:

• Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers
• Then right click any empty space in the right pane, hover over New and click QWORD (64-bit) Value
• Name the new value TdrLevel (if the key already exists, double-click to edit the value)
• Double click TdrLevel. Make sure its value data is set to 0, then click OK
• Close Registry Editor and restart your computer
• Run Fortnite and see if you’ve fixed your crashing issues

Uninstall & Reinstall BattlEye

• Browse to your Fortnite install folder, then: \Fortnite\FortniteGame\Binaries\Win64\BattleEye
• Run Uninstall_BattlEye.bat
• Restart your computer
• Then run Install_BattlEye.bat from the same folder

Change Compatibility Mode on FortniteClient-Win64-Shipping.exe for UE4-FortniteGame Errors

• Browse to your Fortnite install folder, then: \Fortnite\FortniteGame\Binaries\Win64\
• Right-Click on FortniteClient-Win64-Shipping.exe and select Properties
• Go to the Compatibility tab and check Disable Fullscreen Optimizations and click OK
• Right-Click on FortniteClient-Win64-Shipping_BE.exe and select Properties
• Go to the Compatibility tab and check Disable Fullscreen Optimizations and click OK

Reinstall Fortnite

If none of the other options above have worked, you can also try to uninstall and reinstall Fortnite.

• Launch Epic Games Launcher
• Uninstall Fortnite (click the cog next to ‘launch’ and select uninstall)
• Restart your PC
• Launch Epic Games Launcher
• Install Fortnite
• Install Fortnite Save The World (optional, click the settings cog and click ‘options’, tick ‘Save The World’ and confirm)
• Launch Fortnite
